VOLUNTEER

Here are some volunteering opportunities that I was involved with during my time as an undergraduate at Chico State.

Communitiy Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE)

Volunteer for Animal Connection

CAVE Mission:

To provide students with meaningful volunteer opportunities, to develop student leaders, and to serve a broad base of community needs.

My involvement:

I was a volunteer for CAVE through the Animal Connection Program which. This program provides volunteers with the opportunity to socialize sheltered animals at the Butte Humane Society and the Chico Animal Shelter. During the time that I volunteered, I worked with the Chico Animal Shelter. Volunteers promote responsible animal care and educate the community about proper pet care. Participants assist with a variety of tasks depending on the needs of the shelter. Activities can range from interacting with the animals, to cleaning their environment, to assisting with special events as needed. I volunteered at the Chico Animal Shelter because I knew it would be a rewarding experience. I was able to see the joy in every animal's eyes when I walked in the room to give them treats and help them learn good manners. Being that I was unable to have pets at my apartment complex and I missed my dog, I felt that volunteering with CAVE for the Animal Connection would provide me with many opportunities to interact and work with sheltered animals in need of some love and companionship.

Health Professionals Association (HPA)

Volunteer Club Secretary

HPA Mission:

To participate and assist with community health and wellness promotion through events and activities, and to have fun while making a positive impact on the community's health.

My involvement:

I volunteered as the club Secretary with the HPA. The club is a Health and Community Services based student organization that works within the campus and community to promote health and wellness. Our club met every other week to talk about upcoming events that we could participate in, or volunteer for. This club provides a great opportunity to meet new people, get involved with community service, and is an excellent resume booster. I joined HPA because it was a student-run club which promotes wellness within our campus and the greater Chico community, and I felt that it would be a great opportunity to meet new people and create future networking opportunities. As a club, we volunteer at various events and start fundraisers for the Health and Community Services Department to spread our knowledge and skills in the field of community health promotion.

Growing Healthy Children (GHC) Walk & Run

Volunteer Course Marshal

GHC Mission:

The annual Growing Healthy Children Walk & Run in Chico, CA, is to heighten the community's awareness of the need for good nutrition and physical activity as a part of a healthy lifestyle. Growing Healthy Children Chico has been a no-cost event for families in our community for the past 10 years, thanks to generous community support.

My involvement:

I volunteered as a course person. The event reaches participants of all ages, while specifically targeting the low-income CalFresh nutrition education eligible population. Participating booths offered samples of nutritious and tasty foods from local food establishments and restaurants, and the booths highlighted school garden projects by displaying seedlings, plants, and vegetables that had been grown at school gardens, and they demonstrated various exercises that could be done without the need of expensive equipment.

Diversion Excursion (DE)

Volunteer Sustainability Educator

DE Mission:

To take opportunities for positive social and environmental impact and directly benefit a range of community organizations working to help those with limited resources.

My involvement:

I volunteered to educate the residents at the University Village student housing area on how to correctly divert their waste. This sustainable program captures the donations of University Housing residents as they move out, and educates them about the differences in reusable goods and trash. There were seven stations set up where students could bring their unwanted items and donate them to charity. Diversion Excursion is an excellent example of what sustainability means to this campus- it's about conservation, reuse, and reducing environmental impacts in a way that engages students and staff. It's a collaboratively managed program that involves hundreds of volunteers, many of whom return year after year, and thousands of Campus Housing residents. It is a clear demonstration of how hundreds and thousands of small actions add up to a very meaningful difference. Diversion Excursion at Chico State has become an award-winning model for similar programs on other college campuses.
